NHBF National Hair and Beauty Federation

In a significant development for the UK’s hair and beauty sector, Kirsty Watson, Managing Director of Qualia Skin Specialists, has been officially nominated for the presidency of the National Hair & Beauty Federation (NHBF). This nomination underscores her dedication to elevating standards in aesthetic practice and her commitment to education, safety, and ethical conduct within the industry.

About Me

I began my career in the hair industry in 1998 at Toni & Guy, where I gained a strong understanding of both the craft and the business behind it. In 2010, I expanded into the beauty and aesthetics sector, deepening my expertise in advanced skincare, education, and business management.

In 2014, I founded Qualia Academy and Qualia Skin Specialists to combine my passion for training, professional development, and industry innovation. These platforms allow me to provide practitioners with high-quality education and the support they need to succeed.

With a Multimedia Degree, MBA, Trusteeship, and my role on the CMI Board, I’ve strengthened my leadership and commercial expertise. This has enabled me to navigate the complexities of HR, business strategy, and workforce development. Throughout my career, I have worked on recruitment, retention, and marketing, ensuring professionals have the tools to thrive.

Advocacy has always been a core part of my work. I have actively lobbied for policy changes that support marginalised groups, ensuring they receive the recognition and resources they deserve. This is an approach I will continue to prioritise in any role I take on.

What I Would Bring to the Presidency Role

Understanding Industry Pressures

The industry is currently facing significant challenges, and I fully understand how difficult it can be for practitioners to sustain their businesses. Rising costs, recruitment struggles, and changing consumer behaviour are making long-term success more challenging than ever before. While I cannot directly alter tax policies, I will focus on lobbying for subsidies for SMEs. This would include advocating for VAT and NIC reforms and wage subsidies to alleviate the financial pressures on businesses.

Support for Employers

As employer responsibilities continue to grow, particularly with rising minimum wages and increased pension contributions, the burden on small businesses is becoming more severe. I will push for government-backed support packages to provide businesses with financial relief. These packages would allow businesses to sustain jobs, reinvest in their workforce, and avoid further burdens.

Addressing Workforce Shortages

Staff shortages remain a significant issue for the sector. The decline in apprenticeships and the aging workforce make it difficult for businesses to find and retain skilled professionals. I will advocate for better apprenticeship schemes, career progression initiatives, and funding for mentorship programs. These efforts will help businesses attract new talent while retaining experienced professionals within the industry.

Adapting to Changing Consumer Behaviour

Changing consumer habits, including clients spacing out appointments and opting for DIY treatments, are a growing concern. To address this, I will lead educational campaigns that promote the value of professional services. I will also work with businesses to develop strategies for client retention, loyalty programs, and flexible pricing models to ensure a steady demand for services.

Digital Transformation

Many businesses are still struggling to adapt to the digital age, particularly when it comes to online booking systems, social media marketing, and digital client engagement. I will focus on providing practical, accessible digital training and solutions to help salons, barbershops, and other practitioners thrive in a world that is increasingly reliant on digital tools.

Sustainability and Supply Chain Support

Sustainability is becoming more critical for businesses, and many are seeking ways to meet consumer demand for ethical products while keeping costs manageable. I will advocate for government incentives that support sustainable supply chains. This would ease financial strain on businesses while helping them meet sustainability goals.

A Commitment to Progress

If elected to the presidency, I am committed to working alongside NHBF members to push for meaningful policy changes that foster financial stability, workforce development, and business resilience. My approach will focus on practical solutions, advocating for necessary support, and adapting to industry changes to ensure that businesses and practitioners have the tools they need to build a stronger and more sustainable future.
